Readers’ Favorite: 5 Stars Review by Barbara Fanson

Author Mike Mirabella spins a wonderful yarn of an Irish sailor with tales from the ocean blue in On The Luck Of An Irish Sailor. Using rhyme, he reveals the story with words that sound like a pirate in an Irish pub. The sailor who speaks like a pirate saw the slap of a mermaid’s tail during a storm. On The Luck Of An Irish Sailor is a wonderful tale of adventure on the high seas. The sailor tells how his ship tipped over during a storm and he was saved by a mermaid and the luck of the Irish. In a story that’s been passed down for generations, author Mike Mirabella takes us on an adventure deep beneath the ocean. Could it really happen?

Folklore. That’s the feeling I got as I glanced at the sepia-toned illustrations. With accurate depictions of the story, illustrator Amy O’Hanlon uses hues of blues, grays, and browns to depict the storm. On other pages, she uses beige and brown tones to create the illusion of an older picture book—like a classic story that’s been around for years. On The Luck Of An Irish Sailor is a wonderful story by author Mike Mirabella. This book is bound to be a classic tale treasured by children and adults alike. Readers will be hooked with the first stanza and won’t want to put this page-turner down. This book is highly recommended. There are also Celtic song sheets at the back of the book with music notes so you can sing or play along. Reviews: Top Customer Reviews

This is a wonderful book for children! It can fuel their wild imagination, sense of adventure, the curiosity of the world around them, and the inborn joy of lively music. No “cartoonish” figures here…just colorful, happy people with a myriad of interesting marine creatures to wonder over. And the music…simple, but lively, upbeat, authentically accented and performed, hinting of another culture, but easily understood.
Upon reading and listening to “on the Luck of an Irish Sailor” I was immediately drawn to thoughts of my own elementary school music classes decades ago where we collectively sang and sometimes acted out music with the guidance of our inspirational teacher/pianist.
While everyone would surely agree that the book should be in every young child’s home and elementary school library, I especially think copies should be in the hands of every elementary school music teacher to be joyfully sung and performed…and the sheet music is included in the book!

Purchased this book and received it this past week. Read it through and listened to the music three times already. Wonderful story well written and marvelously illustrated. I highly recommend the book not only for children but for those of us that have never let go of the child within.

I was told about this book by a Bay Area friend. What a delightful read, the illustrations are beautiful and I listened to the song sung on YouTube. I would recommend this book to all, ages 5 to 80. A great children’s book of interest to all who are young at heart. Should be in every elementary school library. Parents will love to read this book aloud to their kids.
While the collaboration of Mike Mirabella the author, of Erik Hoffman the composer and Shea Black a well-known musician and singer of Celtic songs, is a tribute to well-established Artists of the Bay Area, it is the young illustrator Amy O’Hanlon who takes my breath away with her fresh interpretation of the magic that infuses this wonderful Folk Tale.

Truly enchanting. “On The Luck of An Irish Sailer,” by Mike Mirabella, is a wonderful story that combines the nostalgic storytelling of an Irish sailor with the whimsical underwater fantasy of swimming with mermaids. But this Irish sailor isn’t just telling his tale, he’s singing it! And it’s the lyricism and songwriting chops of Mike Mirabella that makes this so special. I would recommend reading (or singing) along to the story and turning the pages along with the song as performed by Shay Black – easily found on Youtube. Great for the young, and the young at heart!
